Microscope repair is sometimes necessary. Accidents or component failures do occasionally happen to your precious imaging equipment. Atlantic Imaging work with a small selection of highly skilled engineers to ensure that a seemingly minor amount of damage doesn’t require a costly replacement. Our aim is to repair equipment rather than suggest a replacement, if at all possible; microscope repair is often more cost-effective than microscope replacement.

We recently had a Leica MZ16F on the workbench for a repair to the focus rack. This instrument has a motorised focus and is a real laboratory workhorse, very heavily relied upon by the users. Unfortunately, an accident occurred where the focus was obstructed by something placed on the base of the microscope; with the microscope obstructed in its movement, the plastic focus rack was ground down by the gear. We disassembled the microscope to assess the damage. Regrettably, a direct replacement for the focus rack itself is not possible as the part cannot be obtained from Leica. We explored the options available to us and ruled out a complete replacement of the focus pillar for cost reasons.

Fortunately, our good friends at K-Tec microscopes (link opens in a new tab) came to the rescue. With decades of engineering experience  and microscope repair know-how under his belt, Kevin Champion was able to cut out the damaged tooth section and insert a precision-milled brass insert in its place. With the repaired focus rack in our hands, we rebuilt the instrument, soak-tested it to ensure satisfactory performance, and returned it to the customer.

In addition to repairs and upgrades, Atlantic Imaging are happy to provide routine maintenance to microscope systems – see our servicing page (link opens in a new tab).
